Din is a short experimental work which uses audio in a very novel manner, where each game lasts for only a couple of minutes and players are scored based on their listening ability. The story is centered around a laid-back character named Bill who is having a quiet walk in the park, but is soon followed by his friends and family who harasses him with their troubles, concerns and opinions. Being the friendly guy that he is, Bill must be attentive to their requests or risk upsetting and losing a couple of close buddies.
"We set out with Din to explore how powerful and complex our sense of hearing is, and to push players to learn to rely on it. We discovered that players were initially unaccustomed to doing this, so the first half or whole playthrough became overwhelming. However, after a couple of tries, or sometimes just the first try, players found themselves tracking 3, 5, even 8 conversations at the same time. On top of that, Din is really an allegory for our social lives. The more friends you have, the harder it is to really focus each one through the din of your social network." - Teddy

The competition, now in its 13th year, awarded a total of nearly $50,000 in prizes to deserving indie creators in Main Competition and Student Competition categories at the IGF Awards Ceremony, held in March 2010 at the Moscone Center, San Francisco, CA, as one of the highlights of the Game Developers Conference.
The Independent Games Festival will return in March 2011 at GDC in San Francisco - look for more information soon. [More information...]
