Being inspired by Left 4 Dead, Left 4k Dead has the same levels every time you play it, but the locations of zombies and powerups change with each play through. The entire game is less than 4kB.
"When starting work on a 4kb game, I usually promise myself to not add ANYTHING unless it's absolutely required, in an attempt to make sure I've got room to add as many game mechanics as possible.
Of course, this never works. Or rather, things that shouldn't be important end up being important. The blood splatter, for instance, is pretty useless really, but it works in a great way to inform the player that he has gotten a kill, and is shows what areas of the map already have been visited. The film grain also worked great for the atmosphere and to stop 75% of the game area of being just pitch black. And of course, you HAD to see the zombies' hands when they moved, and you HAD to see your gun shots.
Without things like that, both molotovs and tanks would've been included in the game. Heck, I probably could've fit a few survivor NPC's in there as well. But I'm not sure the game would've been as good. Achieving a good feeling in a game is much more important than just filling it up after a checklist of features." - Markus
