About The IGF

IndieGames.com is presented by the UBM TechWeb Game Network, which runs the Independent Games Festival & Summit every year at Game Developers Conference. The company (producer of the Game Developers Conference series, Gamasutra.com and Game Developer magazine) established the Independent Games Festival in 1998 to encourage innovation in game development and to recognize the best independent game developers.

IGF mobile magic P.2: Doggins, Framed, Sneaky Sneaky, Friendstrap, Atomic+, more

October 30, 2013 10:30 AM | John Polson

IndieGames has continued its IGF 2014 entry spelunking to find additional, promising iOS and Android games submitted (some of which are also coming to or already on PC) with this second collection presented today. Some are expansions of Ludum Dare or similar jams, others have been flying off-radar, until now.

15 Great Free Games on the Amazon Appstore for Android (Really!)

October 29, 2013 9:50 AM | Paul Hack

pixrooms3.jpgSomehow or other, like me, you've wound up with a Kindle Fire. It may not be your Android tablet of choice, but it's an excellent gadget in many ways. As a gamer, you've undoubtedly browsed the poorly organized abyss of the Amazon App Store and shaken your head in disgust at the dearth of great games. For every 10000000 or Spelltower, it seems like there are a hundred lazy clones of Minecraft and Temple Run. But take heart! Here are 15 games on the store that are not only excellent, but free!

IGF mobile magic: Threes, Rainbow, Don't Shoot Yourself, Drei, Blek, Circuits

October 28, 2013 12:15 PM | John Polson

IndieGames has explored the IGF 2014 entrants to find some of the most promising iOS games submitted, with the first collection presented today. IGF Mobile had a good, three-year run before mobile games were made part of the main IGF event. Historically, there are fewer mobile games than PC games entered into the IGF, but that doesn't say anything about the quality of these handheld entries. Whether it be for promising gameplay, audio experimenting, or visual style, here are the first iHighlights from IGF 2014, three of which you can try now on your PC.

Door surfing in a wondrous 2D animated world, if only To Leave

October 25, 2013 7:20 PM | John Polson

to leave.pngEcuadorian developer Freaky Creations has animated something special with its 2D twitch-adventure To Leave, an entry I found in the 2014 IGF line-up. A young boy named Harm has decided to leave his life behind using the Flying Door. Unfortunately, this door is so sensitive that one bump jolts the boy back to reality.

Developers speak: The Ouya, four months later

October 25, 2013 11:30 AM | Staff

The Ouya microconsole has been available to the public for around four months now, and in that time the device's own online marketplace has slowly but surely filled up with indie titles for download.

Gamasutra talked to a range of Ouya developers back at launch, to gauge how they felt about the console, whether sales were looking up, and how they saw the future for the microconsole.

Four months later, sister site Gamasutra has revisited a handful of these developers, while also talking to some studios that have since released games on the Ouya, to get a feel for how the Ouya now stands after the launch hype has died down.

Notch, Phil Fish, Team Meat part of 360 unique Magic cards for Indie Custom Cube

October 24, 2013 1:00 AM | John Polson

indie custom cube feature.png[Update: the Cube has been taken down. Co-creators Derek Yu apologized for alienating anyone, and Laura Shigihara shared her opinion on sexism and racism concerns. Developers such as Anna Anthropy and I Wanna Be the Guy dev Kayin didn't know their likeness or character creation was to be used in the cards.]

Indie superstars from hundreds of the games you love, or love to hate, are all part of a 360 Magic card set called The Indie Custom Cube. These cards came about after many Magic cube drafts at events such as GDC and TIGJam. The first version of these cards was playtested at GDC 2013, and is now available for everyone to enjoy.

Free Games: 3 picks from Klick of the Month 76, a 2-hour Halloween themed jam

October 22, 2013 2:12 AM | Paul Hack

jeremyexphal1.jpgEvery single month, Glorious Trainwrecks hosts the Klick of the Month Club, a 2-hour game jam where the tool of choice is Clickteam's simple (and all but obsolete) Klick & Play gamemaking software. Finishing a game is emphasized over anything else, but constraints can breed creativity. The 76th Klick of the Month Club was particularly fruitful, having produced cool games like the previously covered Ghostflusters and the three selections below.

Elegy for a Dead World - Why so serious, Dejobaan?

October 21, 2013 9:35 AM | John Polson

Dejobaan's games can be stressful: stressful to make (Ugly Baby's been slowly maturing since a 2011 early release), stressful to play (first-person base jumping and tunnel diving), and even stressful to say (Aaaaa!). It's no wonder that the studio's CFO, CEO, and all-around COO-L guy Ichiro Lambe wanted to attempt something different. Thus, their newest game, based in part on British Romantics and wholly experimental, Elegy for a Dead World, was born.

Anna Anthropy's two-dollar experiment

October 20, 2013 7:23 PM | Staff

[by Leigh Alexander]

Designer and author Anna Anthropy has been making free games almost for the entirety of her career.

While she's sold books -- democratic game-making manifesto Rise of the Videogame Zinesters, and saucy Choose Your Own Adventure story Star Wench -- she's never charged for digital work like Lesbian Spider Queens of Mars, Dys4ia, Triad and countless others.

Anthropy, whose work often explores themes of kink, identity and community, has decided to try a new approach: Her latest interactive story, a gleefully-childlike haunted house-themed Choose Your Own Adventure called a very very VERY scary house, is for sale on Gumroad for $2. It's not just an attempt to monetize her own work, but an experiment in disrupting elements of the traditional economy of art games.

Although crowdfunding, patronage and other non-traditional forms of fundraising for games and game creators are increasingly common in the digital age, some standards and expectations still persist -- more traditional independent developers are celebrated for bootstrapping and become "success stories" when they raise money, while others face criticism, a presumption they're "seeking handouts" when they dare to ask for some small amount of money for their work.

Behind the scenes with The Stanley Parable

October 17, 2013 10:47 PM | Staff

[by Mike Rose of Gamasutra]

It's difficult to talk about the first-person choice-wrangler that is The Stanley Parable without drifting in and out of massive spoiler territory, so I thought it would be best to begin this interview with an unmissable "spoiler alert" paragraph.

If you've not played through The Stanley Parable yet, I urge you to back away from this piece now -- you'll only wish that you hadn't had it spoilt for you afterwards. Wandered through it thoroughly? Feel free to proceed.

The Stanley Parable, previously a free Half-Life 2 mod in a former life, is a game riddled with dialogue and choice. You're presented with a simple decision -- the left door, or the right door? -- and from there sprawls a variety of bizarre sights, sounds, and wonders.

It's a game all about choice, although there's this strange nagging feeling throughout that the game is simply causing the illusion of choice, and is actually nudging you in particular directions. I asked creators Davey Wreden and William Pugh whether there was any truth to this.
