About The IGF

IndieGames.com is presented by the UBM TechWeb Game Network, which runs the Independent Games Festival & Summit every year at Game Developers Conference. The company (producer of the Game Developers Conference series, Gamasutra.com and Game Developer magazine) established the Independent Games Festival in 1998 to encourage innovation in game development and to recognize the best independent game developers.

A conversation about SpaceChem dev Zachtronics' new Ironclad Tactics

October 17, 2013 9:09 PM | Staff

ironclad front image.jpgOur own Gnome in Greece and Lena LeRay in Japan used the magic of the internet to discuss their playtime with Zachtronics' card-based tactics game set in an alternate Civil War, Ironclad Tactics.

These are their musings.

Browser Picks: Closure, Sokobond, ending demakes using Increpare's Puzzle Script

October 16, 2013 11:22 PM | John Polson

closure demake.pngIncrepare's Puzzle Script has proven an amazing tool to create games of varying complexity and genre. Today's collection of indie game demakes is just another testament to the usability and popularity of the engine, with puzzle platformer Closure, roguelike-like ending, and chemistry puzzler Sokobond now available for everyone to enjoy for free.

ADHD, arcade creeps, epidemics, angry tech, night shifts: the Asylum Jam games

October 14, 2013 12:55 AM | John Polson

arcade pic.jpgThe first Asylum Jam has come to an end, where developers spent the weekend on horror games "outside of mental health stereotypes." With over 30 games posted so far, there's already quite a bit of variety to choose from. During my time with the lot, games involving ADHD, creeps in arcades, military checkpoint epidemics, space technology horror, night shifts with tiny flash lights, and deadly text-based games have stood out.

50 Easy Steps to Indie Success

October 12, 2013 4:10 PM | Staff

[by Tanya Short]

As the director of Kitfox Games, I have read dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of articles claiming they will assist my 4-person team in making "a successful indie game." New articles come out every day, all with helpful advice for me and my team. Some were linked to me by personal friends, family, colleagues, or industry mentors.

I like to think these people were well-intentioned.

So, having read all of this, what's my plan to succeed? Follow my lead:

  • Okay. Obviously the best thing you can do is FINISH YOUR GAME
  • But wait, don’t ACTUALLY finish it! I hope your game isn't done yet! You’re supposed to start marketing first
  • Freeware Prick: first person adulterer Scarlet

    October 11, 2013 12:21 PM | John Polson

Scarlet scandalous.pngScarlet was quite a shock for me to find on Indie Speed Run 2.0. Not many games have been pushing social or moral issues, even though the contest has no rules against including such content. I don't condone the actions or resolution of the game, hence why I called it something other than a conventional "pick." However, it's there for people to vote on, so why not discuss it?

Plants Vs. Zombies composer, Melolune dev Laura Shigihara reveals next game

    October 11, 2013 3:00 AM | John Polson

Developer and composer Laura Shigihara has been taking a break from RPG Melolune. While that may read as heartbreaking news, her new adventure sounds like it's going to break our hearts in another way. Prepare your tear ducts for Rakuen.

The good and bad of being 'Not On Steam'

    October 10, 2013 1:25 PM | John Polson

not-on-steam.jpgThe Not On Steam sale has come and gone, during which time the games on offer grew 50%, from a lineup of 40 to over 60. Concurrent with that sale was a new batch of games Steam gave the Greenlight, where some of the games went from being 'not on Steam' to being prepped for Steam. Mixing these announcements together seemed like the perfect storm for everyone.

Well, almost everyone. Definitely not for those who were not on Steam, nor not in the "Not On Steam" sale, which had to be capped at 62 games because of concerns that the website was going to take too long to load.

Q&A: Card Hunter - launching an online game with a small team

    October 3, 2013 4:40 PM | Staff

When Jon Chey announced the formation of Blue Manchu in 2011, the Irrational Games co-founder said he wanted to spend time on more "genre, nichey games."

The studio's Card Hunter, released last month, is the manifestation of his efforts. It's a free-to-play, browser-based board and collectible card game, complete with dice rolls and a nerdy game master. That's a bit different from narrative-driven first-person shooter games like System Shock 2 and BioShock Chey worked on at Irrational.

Now that a couple of weeks have gone by, Chey tells us some lessons he and his small team has learned from Card Hunter's launch, and what he might've done differently.

Legend of the Lancer plans to joust onto PC first, stretch onto PlayStation and Wii U

    October 3, 2013 2:25 PM | John Polson

legend of the lancer header.pngLegend of the Lancer clearly wields a mighty large weapon, and it's going to take a sizeable arsenal for the non-linear Metroidvania's plans to strike hard on Windows, Mac, Linux, PS4, PS3, PS Vita, and Wii U. Developer Paul Emanuel of Gorilla Press Games is excited about his upcoming debut game, which is going to take to Kickstarter on October 11 to help make these plans a reality.

Terry Cavanagh's playful process of commercial-free game design

    September 28, 2013 1:22 PM | Staff

Terry Cavanagh has a new game. Actually, scratch that -- the VVVVVV and Super Hexagon developer has finally finished a very old game that has very much been an on-and-off project over a number of years, to the joy of his most dearest of followers.

As you'd expect from Cavanagh, this isn't your average video game release. Over the course of around an hour of play, Naya's Quest explores a wide range of visual perception conundrums, rarely sticking to a single game mechanic for too long. As with VVVVVV, Naya's Quest is simply not content with building an entire experience around a single mechanic.
