This trailer roundup features a mystery MMO which is going to revolve around player discussion, an RTS, a multiplayer co-op run & gun, a $1 retro-style arcade game, a steampunk turn-based tactical game, a metroidvania platformer that looks dark in theme, and a 2-4 player co-op roguelike inspired by the works of Jules Verne.

Treachery in Beatdown City: New York through the eyes of Shawn Allen

"People always talk about 'oh, I was playing games since I was a kid,' and I loved them, but I didn't have them," says Shawn Alexander Allen, who grew up poor in New York City.

His tactical brawler, Treachery in Beatdown City, just finished a successful Kickstarter campaign, his second attempt to fund the game through the crowdfunding service. His game, developed under his studio's name, Nuchallenger, is a side-scrolling, tactical beat-em-up with menu-based combos, classic arcade-style graphics and themes of urban class war, and in many ways it feels like a love letter to his home.

Allen liked writing and illustrating all throughout his childhood, but even though he went to a technical high school in Brooklyn, making games as a career had never occurred to him. He graduated from the prestigious School for Visual Arts where he attended for graphic design, but rather than do web design, he wanted to pursue art and animation.

All along, Allen had hung out at and worked in an Electronics Boutique in his neighborhood, where he shared games fandom with other locals; just down the street was Rockstar Games' Prince Street office. In 2001, the studio would use Allen's Electronics Boutique as a site for focus testing, and he fell in love with the studio's commitment to unique, distinctive and stylish art and visual aesthetics.

Duck Game for Ouya: stow your bow at home, for this is a gunfight!

Remember back when everyone used to call the Ouya a $99 TowerFall box? Well, it's time to unofficially rebrand the indie-friendly console that everyone loves to hate, because a new challenger for the local-multiplayer throne has entered the arena and powerslammed the competition into the floor. Matt Thorson's magnum opus might match it blow-for-blow in the ring when it comes to fast-paced player vs player combat, but with a wonderfully unbalanced array of ridiculous weaponry, devious level design and twisted humour, Landon Podbielski's Duck Game ultimately delivers a K.O. every round. So, if you have both (a) friends and (b) a $99 Duck Game box gathering dust in the corner/on a shelf/under the bed, dig it out and get ready to fall in love with local multiplayer all over again.

Power Stone meets Bushido Blade: Kyoto Wild Q&A with Teddy Diefenbach

"Think about how comfortable you are taking money from people, knowing you may never give them anything in return. What would it be like if that money came from your family?"

- Cubeheart Games' Steve Swink encourages developers at GDC 2014 to think of their Kickstarter backers as family in order to better navigate the ethics of accepting crowdfunding.

SCALE creator Steve Swink gave a fantastic talk during the Independent Games Summit at GDC 2014 about the challenges of navigating the ethical quandaries that developers often face while trying to run successful crowdfunding campaigns.

Swink speaks from experience. The 2013 Kickstarter campaign for his game SCALE began on October 18 and was successfully funded November 16, days before the deadline. During his talk, Swink looks back on the campaign and attempts to explain how and why SCALE was funded, the hellish journey he went through to make it happen, and the complex ethical questions he himself encountered while trying to fund his game via Kickstarter.

Combat game development: The fight to finish Galak-Z

When I called 17-Bit CEO Jake Kazdal last week to talk about his game, he sounded cheerful and excited about how development was going. He also sounded a little desperate. "We're running out of time and money," said Kazdal, whose studio also developed the strategy game Skulls of the Shogun. "All the internal pressure is on beating the holiday wave."

Chariot started as some stick figures, ended up on next-gen consoles and PC
