About The IGF

IndieGames.com is presented by the UBM TechWeb Game Network, which runs the Independent Games Festival & Summit every year at Game Developers Conference. The company (producer of the Game Developers Conference series, Gamasutra.com and Game Developer magazine) established the Independent Games Festival in 1998 to encourage innovation in game development and to recognize the best independent game developers.

Road to the IGF: Simogo's DEVICE 6

February 7, 2014 12:34 AM | Staff

Swedish mobile developer Simogo has quickly become a regular fixture in the Independent Games Festival, thanks to consistent innovation, a distinct sense of style, and an attitude to mobile development that focuses on making the most of a unique platform.

The Buffalo Game Space: Cultivating a game development community

January 31, 2014 8:00 AM | Anthony Swinnich

buffalogamespace1.png

Buffalo, New York is a city known for several things -- chicken wings, harsh winters, Super Bowl losses -- but game development is not one of them. Not yet, anyway, though that's something that may change with the advent of the Buffalo Game Space. This localized collective of indie programmers is starting to gel into something more substantial under a unified banner.

The Buffalo Game Space started in 2012 as a Google group. Founders John Futscher and Chris Langford started holding meetings at Canisus College in December of that year. By day, Futscher is a member of golf sim developer Perfect Parallel, while Langford is a graphic designer and videographer at an unrelated company. They were able to set up a permanent location at The Sportzone in July 2013.

Just who is 'thecatamites' anyway?

January 29, 2014 11:45 AM | Staff

[By Mike Rose]

"Oh no, I like making small shitty games. I only feel embarrassed when I think they're going to just be parsed as these incapable aspirants to some different ideal of what a game should look like, for instance as the withered embryos of 30+-minute IGF contestants rather than as things in their own right."

I first encountered the unmistakable style of Stephen Murphy, aka thecatamites, back in 2009 with the hand-drawn adventure game Paul Moose in Space. Since then you may well have stumbled across any one of the otherworldly experience that he has provided on tap, like Space Funeral, Murder Dog IV: Trial of the Murder Dog, and The Pleasuredromes of Kubla Khan.

Murphy isn't like other developers, and his games are pretty messed up. The animations are crude and visually unpleasant, while the underlying mechanics of play will often force you into the sort of silly and sometimes uncomfortable territory that video games simply don't explore.

Flat shaded 3D graphics, natural play made Sustain a survival game worth watching

January 28, 2014 5:45 PM | John Polson

In-game footage of Svajūnas Žemaitis' Sustain caught the attention of the indiegaming community on reddit for its flat shaded polygons and natural survival interactions, and now the developer has released an early alpha of his first-person game.

Top 10 indie devs pick their faves, share hopes for 2014 (The Final)

January 22, 2014 5:34 PM | John Polson

After a long winter's nap, we speak to the last of our devs to wrap up the year of 2013 and offer four very practical wishes for games in 2014. Speaking today is Jake Elliott from Kentucky Route Zero, along with other developers from Ridiculous Fishing, Guacamelee, and Sharecart 1000.

How today's game developers come to grips with self-promotion

January 16, 2014 7:21 PM | Staff

promote yourself.jpg

[by Leigh Alexander]

Not all that long ago, your average game developer was likely to be defined by one key trait: Obsessiveness. Job postings sought those willing to "eat, breathe and sleep" games -- shorthand, basically, for the willingness to work long and unreasonable hours and to have an internal lexicon so broad that one's almighty 'cred' would be beyond reproach.

The industry ecosystem has permanently changed, though. Game developers can no longer expect they'll definitely become anonymous nodes on massive assembly lines. In fact, working in development these days is just as likely to mean an intimidating level of independence, with small teams having to do many tasks that were once handled by a bigger infrastructure.

Indies and newly-formed studios have quickly had to acclimate to a world where they have to market their own games, do their own press outreach and create their own materials. Social media provides the infrastructure even as it creates the challenge: suddenly everyone needs to be a marketer in order for their brand or service to be visible. Amid the din of "I" statements, the mandate has begun to go even further than simply marketing your product, as any business does. Operating from the fascinating junction of tech, art and entertainment, many game developers are having to start thinking about marketing and promoting themselves.

Interview + Free Game: Tyson Kubota on Skydrift, his first foray into game making

January 16, 2014 4:00 PM | Lena LeRay

Tyson Kubota has just released his first video game, Skydrift, for free on the iOS app store. Made in Unity, the game is a simple, freefall journey "from the heavens down to the earth's core". Skydrift could be likened to a serene, zen version of AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! in which all the player has to do is avoid colliding with things, making sure to collect orbs as they travel. Kubota has studied film making and works on the Criterion Collection's web site by day, but he's spent many a night over the last year learning to use Unity in the quest to make Skydrift. He's taken the time to talk to IndieGames about his experience making his first game and how his background skills helped him out.

Making sexuality and art history part of the game in Painters Guild

January 10, 2014 3:33 PM | John Polson

SelfPortrait.jpg"I think in the future we will have not only historical games surpassing historical films and novels, but being used in historical research as well," says Lucas Molina, creator of Painters Guild. Lucas is a history teacher in Brazil, a Master's student researching art history, and a lover of games. Combining all three passions together to make Painters Guild is a challenge he seems born for.

In the early alpha build, players manage a guild of painters as they try to create works of art and sell their masterpieces to customers before they storm off. Think Diner Dash in the Renaissance.

Lucas tells IndieGames that Painters Guild will be as historically accurate as possible. "Recreating historical systems is a great challenge, but I think it's also the best way to create a historical experience. I'm doing quite a bit of research, there's a list of my current bibliography here. I don't think games usually have bibliographies."

Like several of the real lives and relationships Lucas wishes to portray, the current version of the game has no happy ending. Da Vinci is always arrested due to his homosexuality if players reach that point in history.
