Indie Tools: Petit Computer

petit computer.pngPetit Computer wont be something for the professional or the experienced developer, but it will be an easy-to-use and apparently cheap way to develop simple games for the Nintnendo DSi and 3DS and, thus, have some excellent and most creative hobbyist times. Besides, the only thing that will make you a better game designer is to actually design more games on all sorts of platforms.

Petit Computer seems to be built on an expanded and properly optimized BASIC that lets you do all sorts of things and maybe even help the DSi get a rich homebrew gaming ecosystem. Sharing the games will ingeniously be done via QR codes. Anyway; just watch the trailer:

Petit Computer will appear on the Nintendo DSiWare service on July the 19th.

Browser/Android Game Pick: Didi's Adventure (Panic Arts)

One-person studio Panic Arts has released Didi's Adventure, an overhead-view action game available as a free HTML5 browser game and as an app for Android devices.

In Didi's Adventure, you're only able to control Didi indirectly -- click on your destination, and Didi will start walking in that general direction. Plan your steps carefully, though, or Didi might stumble into beds of spikes or wandering enemies. Coins earned within levels can be spent on new costumes for Didi, more of which will be added in future updates.

The Android version of Didi's Adventure is priced at $1.47. A free Lite version is also available.

Trailer: Vampires! (CBE Software)

Never mind the zombies; here are the Vampires! Or, well, here's a Vampires! trailer that looks very promising indeed. There are, you see, definite hints of humour and some interesting visuals on show, whereas the core gameplay idea could turn out pretty brilliantly. Vampires will after all combine certain aspects of Lemmings with real-time board game mechanics, mainly involving the rotating of maze tiles and the thinking in puzzle solving ways, and I can't really see how something of the sort could fail to entertain.

Vampires! will launch for iOS and Android devices sometime during the third quarter of 2012 and will apparently be accompanied by a beefed-up PC version. You can watch said version's definitely more impressive trailer here.

The Day After #ScreenshotSaturday 3

Leading off this week's ScreenshotSaturday selections, Lone Survivor developer Jasper Byrne is working on something too new to describe in words. However, it appears to be a first-person title that uses the RGB color model. The green entity looks rather spooky.

So mysterious is Byrne's next title that it warrants another photo after the jump, along with a healthy selection of games new to the blog.

Free 2012 Game Career Guide issue available from Game Developer

game career guide fall 2012.jpegFor the fifth year running, Game Developer magazine's annual Game Career Guide issue -- which aims to help students and aspiring developer secure a job in the game industry -- will be given away for free.

The free special issue is available in digital form, and print versions will be distributed at several major video game consumer and trade shows, including Penny Arcade Expo, GDC, and more.

The 2012 Game Career Guide includes beginner-friendly tutorials on starting out with the Unreal Development Kit, building a mod with the Source Engine SDK, prototyping quick and dirty art assets, and a primer on game modifications. The issue also includes a version of Game Developer's yearly Salary Survey tailored for entry-level game developers, a listing of industry conferences, game jams, and indie competitions that every developer should know of, and a directory of game development programs across the world for students interested in getting into the industry.

It wouldn't be a Game Developer issue without a postmortem, of course. This year's Game Career Guide postmortem is on The Snowfield, an IGF Student Showcase-nominated experimental title from the MIT GAMBIT Game Lab. Project lead Matthew Weise explains what went right and wrong while exploring alternative theories of game narrative (and managing a team of student interns).

New Trailer + Kickstarter: Detective Grimoire (The Super Flash Bros)

"Right in the middle of crunch time for the game, we decided it would be the absolute most sensible thing ever to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund the final few months," says Tom Vian, organizer of the recently launched Detective Grimoire Kickstarter campaign.

Setting a goal of $25,000 for the previously announced iOS and Android versions of Detective Grimoire, The Super Flash Bros note that Windows and Mac ports of their adventure title will be possible if pledges reach a total of $30,000.

Pledge $4 or more and you will receive a copy of the iOS or Android version of the game upon its launch. Higher pledges are eligible for t-shirts, art books, and other bonuses.

PAX Prime 2012's PAX 10 Revealed

pax prime pax 10.jpgPax Prime 2012, the sold-out Seattle, WA game conference, has announced the indie developers they will feature in PAX 10. Fifty industry experts have chosen these ten games for the show as the best of all submissions "in regard to gameplay and overall fun-factor."

The ten games include four unreleased titles, five published titles, and one title that requires too many friends that own a Move motion controller. Here are your indies:

Mobile Game Pick: The Big Big Castle! (Beep Games)

big castle.pngThe Big Big Castle! is a free-to-play and pretty much casual iPad game designed by Ron Gilbert (yes, that Ron Gilbert) and Clayton Kauzlaric (yes, that Clayton Kauzlaric), and released by Beep Games. It's a physics-heavy game that lets you build tall and sturdy castles for a king, all the while keeping your head on your shoulders, tastefully arranging princesses and providing accommodation to the medieval poor. As the game's tagline goes, well, "building castles hasn't been this much fun since 1326" and when you have Ron Gilbert writing stuff for it you can expect some excellent humour to go along with the addictive gameplay.

Mind you, even if you are of a more aggressive nature and building things just doesn't feel satisfying enough, the game has you covered too. You can destroy castles using canons or even UFOs. Better yet you can use some sort of internet magic and level your friends' creations.

Introversion Talk: Subversion and Prison Architect

Next up from the Rezzed conference, Introversion thoroughly examined the canceled Subversion, showing why it ultimately didn't work as a game, and discussed how sim Prison Architect came to exist.

Chris Delay and Mark Morris make up Introversion Software, the developer behind titles such as Uplink and IGF Winner Darwinia. In this talk, Morris mentioned briefly that as the business guy, he convinced Delay not to release Uplink for free. Instead, consumers received Uplink on iPad last month.

Delay lamented that while he was proud of the tech and graphics of Subversion, the gameplay itself just didn't make for a fun game. Delay explained that during a holiday away from Subversion, he visited Alcatraz in San Francisco, which ended up inspiring Prison Architect. He also credited Dwarf Fortress as an influence.

Demoed in a rather engrossing presentation, Prison Architect has made late 2013, the release date, seem even further away.

Stuck on Full-Body Game Recurse for iPad 2

More fun than any hands-free experience I've had with Microsoft's Kinect, Lumalus Inc.'s Recurse has convinced me that the iPad 2 and 3's camera is underused, or maybe Recurse is the epitome of what is possible with a camera-included tablet. Either way, this is one of the most original, enjoyable iPad 2+ experiences and is now on sale for under $0.99 (full price is $1.99).

Three game modes exploit Recurse's simple premise of moving one's body in green areas while avoiding red areas. Shuffle and slide modes involve getting the highest score in 30 seconds. In the three-strikes survival mode, the game penalizes for any missed green areas and touched red areas. Recurse randomly snaps a photo of the player and adds the picture with the score to the game's leader board.

Those without an iPad 2/New can start making noise for a Windows or Mac version of Recurse, as the developer is keen on meeting gamers' interests. Click on to read about the game's course from Mac to Windows to Kinect and finally to iPad 2.
