Want Games? An In-Depth Indie Game Guide

IndieGames.com is delighted to be partnering with indie game news site TIG Source, which recently posted a detailed guide to '50 Really Good Indie Games', edited by Derek Yu. The list is as close to a canonical countdown of the best independent games that we've seen, so we're pleased that they have allowed us to reprint it here.

The introduction to the list, as it originally appeared on TIGSource.com, follows:

"This is in no way meant to be a "best of" list or any kind of indie gaming canon, although every game in this list is recommended highly. The purpose of this list is to aggregate a diverse collection of high quality independent games, and say a little about the significance of each one... The hope is that both newcomers and those familiar with independent gaming will find something new and interesting to play or think about! The list was pared down from a bigger list of over a hundred favorite independent titles from the TIGForums community."

The Indie Game Guide: (41-50)

Truck Dismount (FREE)

Smashing a man into a wall and trying to do as much bodily harm to him as possible might seem sadistic as opposed to incredibly fun, but you have to realize that this is a video game and not real life, people!
Also by this developer: Stair Dismount (same link as above)
Also try: Sumotori Dreams

Dungeon Crawl (FREE)

Ostensibly based on Nethack, ADOM, and other Roguelikes that came before it, Crawl nonetheless innovates by offering an extensive list of starting race and class combinations, as well as a diverse pantheon of gods with whom you may align regardless of your starting abilities. It's also more lean and balanced than its predecessors, focusing more on logic and tactical skill rather than memorization.
Also try: DoomRL

Deadly Rooms of Death ($20)

Deadly Rooms of Death is a turn-based, grid-based puzzle game where you play as Beethro Budkin, a "dungeon exterminator extraordinaire" who is charged with clearing King Dugan's dungeons of cockroaches, goblins, and other monsters. With each move Beethro makes, the monsters close in, and in order to defeat them, he must smite them with his Really Big Sword, which occupies an entire tile itself. The turn-based mechanics of this game are extremely clever, and DROD is regarded as one of the best (and underrated) indie puzzle games.
Also try: Drain Storm

Professor Fizzwizzle ($20)

Professor Fizzwizzle is a light-hearted puzzle game for fans of the genre. Tightly packaged, with plenty of options for players of varying levels, the game provides plenty of clever puzzles that involve lots of crates, barrels, magnets, robots, and other fun devices.
Also by this developer: Fizzball

Death Worm (FREE)

Death Worm is a simple action game that captures the spirit of its source material (Tremors, Dune, Beetlejuice, etc.) perfectly. The result is the best, and only, giant sandworm simulator you'll ever play. And it's a strange and wonderfully fun experience.

The Chzo Mythos (FREE)

The Chzo Mythos is a quadrilogy of adventure games by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw that revolves around the mysterious, malevolent spirit of John DeFoe. Beginning with 5 Days a Stranger, where you play a cat burglar trapped in the haunted house of John DeFoe, and ending with 6 Days a Sacrifice, which takes place in the headquarters of a fad cult, the Chzo games span hundreds of years, three different protagonists, and plenty of horrific mysteries. Each game is unique, but you'll want to play them in order to get the full impact of this excellent series.

Eyezmaze (FREE)

From the well-loved "Grow" series of games which have you combining various ingredients in a mad-scientist fashion to discover the best outcome, to Chronon, the time-jumping puzzle adventure game (depicted in the screenshot), Eyezmaze games are all about unexpected surprises! A spirit of reckless experimentation make these games an absolute blast to play and there are few game developers out there that can match the inventiveness of Eyezmaze.
Also try: Makibishi Comic

Outpost Kaloki ($20)

Outpost Kaloki is an economic simulation that puts you in charge of operating space stations, earning money by servicing the needs of various human and alien travellers. Like many "tycoon" games, Outpost Kaloki requires a good deal of micromanagement, but avoids the usual pitfalls of the genre by being easy to get into, fast-paced, and whimsical in nature. It also gets major bonus points for not actually having the word "tycoon" anywhere in the title itself!

Punishment (FREE)

Punishment is an assault to the senses, a punishingly difficult platform game that continually alters the player's perception. It's the gaming equivalent of spinning around until you're dizzy and then trying to walk in a straight line... and as a bonus, there's a level that features a giant, smiling portrait of Shigeru Miyamoto in the background.
Also try: The Big Adventure of Owata's Life

Lugaru ($20)

One of the first independent games to employ ragdoll physics, Lugaru is also known for its unique protagonist, the anthropomorphic rabbit named Turner, as well as its intuitive, context-sensitive combat system which includes hand-to-hand as well as weaponed combat.
